Roland picked himself up from the ground, moaning in pain. His right leg burned, refusing to bear weight, and he fell back down again, grabbing his leg and wincing.

“No!” A cry came from the distance.

He opened his eyes and looked around the clearing, finally seeing Salvador run out of the fray and fall by Tamisra’s side, frantically examining her body.

Roland looked for Zeta, but the assassin had vanished, leaving behind a trail of blood. Dawn was still standing nearby, looking down helplessly at Salvador and Tamisra.

The battle had moved on, pressing deeper into the streets of the Hub and leaving them behind.

“Tami!” Roland cried as he struggled to his feet, making his way toward her and fighting away the crushing fog that was bearing down on his vision.

He reached Tamisra’s side and cradled her head, stroking her forehead as she choked on blood. He looked up at Salvador, who was blankly staring down at his bleeding daughter with a pale face.

“You did this,” he muttered softly as he turned his gaze to Roland. “You have brought ruin to my family. The only family I have left. First Refuge, and now my last child.”

His face slowly morphed from shock to rage.

“You did this!” Salvador roared as he wrapped his hand around Roland’s throat, lifting him up as he stood. “You have taken everything from me, and for what? So you can have your petty revenge?”

“You’re right,” Roland choked out, gasping for air. “I was wrong to think we could win this. But maybe there’s still—”

“Enough! You and your impetuous naiveté have damned my people. Are you pleased with yourself? Can you die now at peace, knowing that you have successfully destroyed everything I have built?”

“Daddy, stop!”

Tamisra’s pained cry seemed to be just enough to snap Salvador out of it, and he released Roland’s throat, immediately breaking into tears and collapsing at his daughter’s side.

Roland let himself fall to the ground as well, and he placed a hand over Tamisra’s bleeding chest. “I’m so sorry, Tami,” he said hoarsely. “Your father’s right. This is all my fault.”

She looked back up at him with glazed-over eyes. “Last I checked, you didn’t stab me. Not your fault.”

Roland shook his head, shaking free tears that fell on her bloodied face. “I could have stopped this. All of this. None of this would have happened.”

Dawn appeared, kneeling on the opposite side of Tamisra’s body and examining the dying girl rapidly.

“Thank God,” Roland said through his tears. “What do you need, Dawn? Tell me how to fix this.”

After studying Tamisra’s body for several more seconds, Dawn looked back up at Roland and shook her head.

“No,” he said, bitterly squeezing Tamisra’s hand. “You can save her. You have to save her.”

“I can’t, Roland.” Dawn looked down at the gaping wound in Tamisra’s stomach. “Not even if I had my equipment with me. There’s no saving this.”

Roland released Tamisra’s hand and grabbed Dawn’s shoulder tightly. “Don’t say that. You can do this.”

She winced at his grip but shook her head.
